The Texas Environment Health Association was founded in 1956 as the Texas Association of Sanitarians. In 1965 TAS proposed and sponsored the Texas Statue that established the Registration of Professional Sanitarians. In 1970, TAS affiliated with the National Environmental Health Association and in 1971 officially changed the association name to the Texas Environmental Health Association to recognize the broad spectrum of environmental concerns represented by the membership.
