South Texas Governing Council News


Greetings from Sunny South Padre Island!

I would like to congratulate Art Rodriguez for being elected as the 1st Vice President on the TEHA Governing Council. We would also like to recognize and congratulate our new TEHA-STC Vice President Jesus Rodriguez and President Elect Josh Garza for joining our South Texas Chapter. I know that they will do an outstanding job!


To keep everyone up to date, I would like to tell you about our past and future trainings:


The Zoo Extravaganza and Excursion Training was held on April 28, 2017 at the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville Texas. We thank our excellent presenters:
•Dr. Ronald D. Tyler Jr., DVM, MS Zoonosis Control Veterinarian, Texas Department of State Health Services Region 11 on the topic “Non-Human Primate and Zoonotic Disease”,
•Dr. Thomas DeMaar, is the Senior Veterinarian at the Gladys Porter Zoo (considered one of the 10 best zoos in the USA). Dr. DeMaar’s experience includes wildlife and zoological medicine, international agriculture development, environmental research, wildlife rehabilitation, and conservation education in the USA, Mexico, Uganda, Pakistan and Kenya. Mr. James Dunks’ topic on “Weird Animal Calls out of the ordinary”, and
•James Dunks, 20 Years’ Experience as SGT-Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Bachelors in Criminal Justice, Minor in Animal Science from Sul Ross State University topic on “Wildlife Gone Wild”.

Attendees had a blast during the Excursion as they traveled and got a first-hand behind the scenes look at the day-to-day operations of the zoo grounds.


SAVE THE DATE: The Texas Environmental Health Association – South Texas Chapter (TEHA-STC) is cordially invites you to their December 6, 7, and 8, 2017 Conference at the Isla Grand on Sunny South Padre Island. The training courses will be for Registered Sanitarians, Code Enforcement Officers, Animal control Officers, and Pesticide Applicators. Continues Education Hours will be provided. Food Handlers certification will be offer as an extra course.


As a friendly reminder, please update your membership card yearly. You can join, or print your current card thru the website.
