TEHA was founded in 1956 as the Texas Association of Sanitarians (TAS).  In 1965, the TAS proposed and sponsored the Texas statute that established the Registration of Professional Sanitarians.  In 1970, TAS affiliated with the National Environmental Health Association and in 1971 officially changed its name to the Texas Environmental Health Association.
